Philippe Clement wants end to costly errors as Rangers seek to improve away form

The Light Blues have only won three times in 11 league games on their travels this season.

Philippe Clement wants to eradicate costly individual errors as he looks to improve Rangers’ dismal away record in the William Hill Premiership.

The Light Blues have won just three of their 11 league fixtures outside of Ibrox this season, which has contributed massively to them trailing leaders Celtic by 13 points.

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Dundee United, Clement told Sky Sports Scotland what he is looking for from his side as they resume domestic duties following their agonising 2-1 Europa League defeat at Manchester United on Thursday night.

“The main thing this season is that in several games we made individual mistakes and because of that, we had to chase games, and that’s been our major problem,” said the Belgian boss, who will assess the fitness of Vaclav Cerny, Robin Propper and Connor Barron after they came off at Old Trafford.

“In the beginning of the season, in the first months, we had also a lot of new players, and they had to understand all the principles.

“They had to find this cohesion on the field, to do the right things at the right moment together.

“You see that better and better with the whole squad, even if players have to play different positions.

“So that’s better, but the last few away games where we lost points, it was majorly because we were dominating games but we made individual mistakes so we need to take that one out.”

Clement was hamstrung with suspension, injuries and ineligible players for the trip to Old Trafford and the visitors ended the game with 18-year-old academy graduates Findlay Curtis and Bailey Rice on the park and players out of position.

A stoppage-time Bruno Fernandes winner gave United victory over the Govan outfit after another costly mistake, this time when Gers keeper Jack Butland punched a corner into his own net, handed the home side the lead before Light Blues substitute Cyriel Dessers levelled late on.

Clement believes the “good vibe” at Rangers was demonstrated against United and it allowed him to take further encouragement.

He said: “It’s clearly a positive and everybody can see that all the squad is working really hard to do the things well together.

“Even if you need to replace players or put players in positions that they are not used to playing, they’re doing the job there, and they’re doing it really well.

“Otherwise, you cannot have a performance like that against Manchester United.

“It shows the good vibe in the building, in the dressing room, in everything; that everybody wants to get results and doing everything for it, putting their ego aside.

“And that’s the way we need to continue. The injuries are there, and we need to continue now with the squad was fit and to get the injured players back.”

Clement revealed that severe weather conditions on Friday due to Storm Eowyn prevented an earlier look at Cerny, Balogun and Barron.

The Gers boss, speaking at the club’s training ground, said: “Yesterday, we planned to come back to train here in the building, but with the storm, it was too dangerous.

“There were a few cars smashed on the road here in the morning, so it was too dangerous to come to the building.

“It was also not possible to take players to the hospital to make a scan, for example, to check things.

“It is disruptive, for sure, but we need to adapt. It is what it is. You cannot change anything about it and you can only control the things you can control yourself.

“This was out of control for everybody and we need to adapt. So I need to make decisions later on today or tomorrow.”
