Chris Wilder revealed Sheffield United “are after five and close on three” new signings after his side moved back to the top of the Sky Bet Championship with a routine 2-0 win against Norwich.

Harrison Burrows scored both goals for the Blades to take them two points ahead of Leeds, who take on Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road on Sunday.

On the performance, Wilder added: “I thought it was good against a team pretty similar to us, missing some players but on a decent run as well. So a dangerous game for us, some good players, but I thought we got everything right, pretty much.

“The shape of the team out of possession was good. We knew that the two centre-halves would have a lot of the ball and try and build through the goalkeeper, so we had to be disciplined in that.

“We defended really well, back to clean sheets, which is huge for us.

“The timings of the goals were good. To get the first one, second one settled us down and I was delighted in terms of the attitude of the team after that. They looked as if they were really enjoying the afternoon.

“We never sat back and went 4-5-1 or 5-4-1, whatever it is, and soaked it up. We went hunting and pressed really well for the third, so a good afternoon for us.

“I’ve managed over a thousand games and nothing’s won in January, but it was a big three points on offer today and to take four points off Norwich, who are well coached with a lot of good players, is a good effort.

“We’ve earned the right to be where we are and we’ve got to enjoy it. We’ve just got to be consistent.”

Norwich head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup felt his side lacked a competitive edge.

“Competitiveness. I think that’s the biggest difference tonight,” he said.

“I think we expected to be able to dominate the game on the ball because that’s also what we see from Sheffield. It’s not that important for them to have the ball a lot, so we expected that.

“But I think the biggest difference was taking care of the moments where you’re in and around the box, creating good chances.

“I think first half we are in many good situations, we have many good opportunities but we don’t take care of them.

“Of course, after the goal, they get a little on top. I think the start of the second half is actually okay for us again. We know that some moments we have to be careful about conceding too many corner kicks against a team like them.

“I think we dealt with them all right and then it’s still just at the end of a corner kick we concede a penalty. If you do that away from home in a place like this, then it’s going to be too difficult.

“So we have to avoid that and we have to be able to get rid of those mistakes that just changes the game picture. I think we have to be able to avoid them.

“I think we had a good rhythm to begin with, a good flow, but also have to be able to recognise sometimes to be a little bit more direct in our approach. So we don’t do the same over and over again.”
