TEAM IRELAND’S Thomas Fannon has qualified for the Men’s 50 metre Freestyle Semi Finals after placing first in his heat on Thursday morning.
The former European junior champion achieved the sixth quickest time of all the heat stage races, securing a time of 21.79 seconds in heat six and setting a new Irish record to book his place in Thursday evening’s semi-finals on his Team Ireland debut.
From the 73 athletes involved in the heats, only the 16 fastest would advance to the semis, with the Irish swimmer’s time only being surpassed by Australia, Cayman Islands, France, Italy and the UK.
Australia’s Cameron McEvoy recorded the fastest time at 21.32 seconds, which the Irishman will see as well within his reach.
The 26-year-old will be joined by the 15 other fastest swimmers in this event at 7.46pm this evening to decide who will progress to the Final.
The Final will welcome tonight’s eight fastest Semi Finalists for a chance at the Medals on Friday at 7.30pm.
