Armagh GAA
Armagh has a rich GAA history and the county’s senior footballers are currently All-Ireland champions following their final victory over Galway in July. The Orchard County is predominantly a footballing stronghold, boasting one of the strongest squads in the modern game and a coach to match the team’s quality in Kieran McGeeney, who was the captain when Armagh won their only other All-Ireland SFC in 2002. Key players for the Armagh senior footballers include Irish News Ulster All-Stars Rían O’Neill, captain Aidan Forker and Ulster Men’s Footballer of the Year Barry McCambridge. Armagh currently play in the first division of the Allianz Football League after getting to the final of Division Two last season, ultimately losing to Donegal. The Orchardmen have won 14 Ulster football titles, with their last triumph coming in 2008. The club football scene has become very competitive in recent years, following a period of sustained success by Crossmaglen Rangers, one of the strongest club sides in Ireland in modern Gaelic football Crossmaglen have won six All-Ireland titles, the most recent of which coming in 2012, when they defeated Garrycastle of Westmeath in a replay to retain their All-Ireland title. Hurling is not followed as widely as football is, however, in south Armagh, some clubs remain, with Middletown and Keady producing most of the county’s senior panel of recent years.
