Cavan GAA
Cavan are Ulster’s most successful side of all time, with five All-Ireland titles and 40 Ulster SFC wins in their history. The Breffni County’s first All-Ireland title came in 1933, after they stopped a Kerry five-in-a-row run. However, their latest national title came all the way back in 1952. Their Ulster SFC win in 2020 was their first since 1997. Due to Covid restrictions, the Championships format reverted to a straight knockout and they lost to Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final. Cavan play in the second tier of the Allianz Football League and finished third in the table behind finalists Armagh and Donegal in 2024. Cornafean are the county’s most successful club, winning 20 Cavan SFC titles. Maghera MacFinns were the first champions of the county, winning the first final in 1888 against Ballyconnell. Hurling has dwindled in Cavan in recent years, with only three clubs playing at senior club level. The county reached the final of the Lory Meagher Cup in 2021, losing to neighbours Fermanagh. East Cavan Gaels are the reigning senior hurling champions after beating Cootehill Celtic in the final at Kingspan Breffini Park.
