Derry GAA
The Oak Leaf County has always been a county of football heritage, with the team reaching their first All-Ireland final in 1958, but they had to wait until 1993 to lift the Sam Maguire Cup. They have won eight National League title, including the 2024 Division One final, beating Dublin in the final on penalties. The footballers have won nine Ulster SFC titles and made 19 finals in total. Within the county’s club scene, Bellaghy are the most successful, however, recently Glen have emerged as a powerhouse under new Tyrone manager Malachy O’Rourke. The Maghera-based club has won the last three Derry titles and made it to the last two All-Ireland club deciders, winning in 2023. Bellaghy, Lavey and Ballinderry have also won All-Ireland club titles, in 1971, 1990 and 2001 respectively. Hurling in Derry has a strong tradition with a competitive club scene. Kevin Lynch’s Hurling Club of Dungiven are the most successful hurling side with 23 Derry SHC titles. However, Slaughtneil have established dominance in recent years, winning the last 11 county titles. They have also played in eight of the last 10 Ulster finals, winning four.
