Monaghan GAA
Monaghan follows the Ulster tradition of being football dominated and has a tradition of great players and is the second most successful side in the Ulster SFC. The Farney Army have won 16 provincial titles, with their latest coming in 2015 when they defeated Donegal to lift the Anglo-Celt Cup. The final of the Ulster SFC is held in St Tiernach’s Park in Clones every year. On a national level, Monaghan have been less successful, having never won an All-Ireland title, only managing a runner-up spot in 1930. They managed to get to the semi-final of the competition in 2018 and 2023, losing to Ulster rivals Tyrone and Dublin respectively. In the league, Monaghan currently play in Division Two, having finished bottom of Division One last year with just one win in seven games. Monaghan’s most successful club is Casteblayney Faughs who have won 37 Monaghan SFC titles, with Scotstown the next best with 22 wins. In hurling, Monaghan are not traditionally strong, currently competing in Division 3A and the Nicky Rackard cup, only managing one win in senior inter-county level all year.
